This policy covers SOMA Commute, our iPhone app, and this website. The short version: we don't know who you are, and we'd like to keep it that way. The longer version is below.
No accounts
SOMA Commute doesn't have accounts. We don't ask for your name, email address, phone number or any other contact information, and the app doesn't collect them.
Your location
If you allow it, the app uses your location while it's open to tell whether you're nearer your home station or the city, so it can show the right board first. This happens on your phone. Your location is never sent to us or to anyone else. You can turn location access off at any time in the iPhone's Settings.
Your commute settings
Your stations, your jitney stop and the hours you usually travel are saved on your phone. They aren't sent to us.
Notifications
Reminders, like when it's time to leave or board, are scheduled on your phone by the app.
Train and PATH times
To show departures, the app asks our server, api.somalabs.dev, for the latest times. Our server gets them from NJ Transit and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
Like any web server, ours sees standard information about each request: your IP address, the time, and which station's board was asked for. We don't use this to identify anyone, and we don't sell it or share it. The server is hosted on Cloudflare, which handles that traffic for us.
Usage counts
The app sends a few anonymous counts, like when it's opened, when you look up a train, or when you start tracking a ride, so we can see which parts are useful and how many people use it. Each phone gets a random number that isn't connected to your name, your Apple account, or anything else about you. The counts don't include your location or contact details, and they aren't used to track you across other apps or websites. We use a service called PostHog to tally them.
You can turn this off in the app, under Settings, then Share Anonymous Usage.
What we don't do
- We don't sell your data.
- We don't show ads, and the app has no third-party advertising trackers.
This website
somalabs.dev doesn't use cookies or analytics. It's also hosted on Cloudflare, which sees standard request information like any web host. The fonts come from Google Fonts, so your browser asks Google for them when you visit.
Children
SOMA Commute is not directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect information from them.

If anything here changes, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
